Become A Better Spa Manager: Skills To Master

Written By:
Jen Okhiria

If you are a spa manager or aspire to be, you’ll know what this is a role of many talents. Between managing guests, staff, creative direction, budgeting and even bookkeeping, spa management requires a wide array of skills. But what skills should you hone in on? What will help you feel successful and fulfilled? We spoke to Eminence Organics PR Manager, Jessica Timberlake to share her valuable insights from her time as a spa director in Southern California. Now on the Board of Directors for the International Spa Association (ISPA) and the Canadian Ambassador for Global Wellness Day, read on to see the skills she cites as invaluable.

Leadership

Being a strong leader is a foundational skill for spa managers. Leading successfully creates a more engaged team atmosphere, diminishing tension and fostering a warm, calm environment that your guests will notice. Explaining why this is important, Jessica says:

The right leadership is critical to retain staff and keep your team engaged.

“Your staff will look to you as the compass, leading them through each day. Not only will you support them in spa operations, but you’ll mentor them through leading by example. The right leadership is critical to retain staff and keep your team engaged. If your spa director role is at a hotel or resort, leadership is part of the equation beyond the spa walls. You’ll be a role model across the property, championing the guest experience and supporting other executives.”

Jessica’s recommendation to give you inspiration? She says, “45 million viewers can’t be wrong. Carve out a few minutes and sink into this epically influential TED talk by Simon Sinek.”

Giving And Receiving Feedback

Learning how to give and receive feedback is becoming more and more crucial for managers in every field. According to a survey of business professionals by PwC and cited by LinkedIn, “nearly 60% of survey respondents reported that they would like feedback on a daily or weekly basis — a number that increased to 72% for employees under age 30.” Jesssica has noted this as a crucial area of spa management, sharing:

“To mentor and grow your team, and yourself as well, learning to deliver feedback in a neutral way that will ultimately support your staff in their role is essential to keeping your team engaged. Consider how to receive feedback as well as from who - is it the general manager, or the owners of the hotel? If you own your own spa, is your staff giving you feedback? How do you interpret it?”

When asked how to improve, Jessica suggests you “take a course on LinkedIn Learning and then practice. Before going into a feedback conversation, take time to write your thoughts down and get organized. Play out the scenario with a trusted colleague if it’s a particularly sensitive situation.” Spa manager and staff member having a discussion

Networking

In addition to enhancing your soft skills inside the spa, embracing the community outside your own spa helps you be a better spa manager. As noted by Forbes, networking is important for your career as it helps create a positive view of your business, fosters an exchange of creative ideas with others in the industry and builds relationships and opportunities with potential clients and employees. Jessica explains:

“The spa industry is warm, welcoming and friendly. Whether you’re a veteran in the industry but new to management, or brand new to the spa world - get connected. The resources and connections are limitless once you reach out. Networking with your community has perks such as driving business from other locals.”

Attend your local Chamber of Commerce mixers. Join a trade organization, such as the International Spa Association...

There are many ways to start networking right away. Tradeshows are an excellent avenue to meet fellow professionals and brush up on your industry knowledge. Jessica adds: “Attend your local Chamber of Commerce mixers. Join a trade organization, such as the International Spa Association, which has dozens of invaluable benefits including an industry best practices guide, research, educational materials and an annual conference where you can grow all of your professional skills and see what products are the latest and greatest.”

Retail Savvy

As well as honing your soft skills, business skills are essential when managing a spa. Being retail savvy is crucial to your spa’s success, as retail sales typically make up a large percentage of your overall revenue. Jessica advises:

“One of the number one opportunities spa managers state as a pain point is retail sales ‘left on the treatment table.’ According to best practices, ideal retail sales should track 30% to 50% of your top line revenue.”

She recommends leaning in and accepting help from experts around you to improve this skill: “Look to your vendor partners for retail sales advice. They’re experts in merchandising, provide sales training and may even offer incentives for your guests, such as a gift with purchase to spur sales.” Spa manager and her employee look at retail shelves

Marketing

Put your retail savvy to good use by brushing up on your marketing skills. Whether you realize it or not, traditional marketing is a large part of the day to day tasks of a spa manager. Jessica puts this perfectly, saying: “From seasonal specials, holiday treatments, spa menu design, group packages, trend forecasting - you will do it all!”

To ensure you’re staying modern and on top of the latest industry trends, Jessica keeps it simple:

“Read! Make an array of trade publications part of your monthly required reading. Magazines sent to spa professionals such as American Spa, Skin Inc, DAYSPA, Puls and Les Nouvelles Esthetique provide invaluable insights into maximizing your marketing potential.”

Financial Fluency

With a strong retail strategy in place, ensure you have an understanding of how it affects your bottom line. To lead your team and business in the right direction, financial fluency is vital, enabling you to plan both short and long term goals. Jessica highlights this, saying:

“Your math teacher was right - numbers don’t lie. Knowing at a glance whether your margins are up or down, your retail:treatment ratio is on point and what your cost of goods sold is will give you immediate intel into the fiscal health of your spa and lay the path for where you need to focus your energy - is it inventory management, treatment sales, reducing costs or remixing your spa packages?”

Run all of the financial reports from your spa’s software system and dig deep.

If finance is out of your comfort zone, don’t fret - you’re not alone. There are many opportunities to learn, whether self-led, taking online courses, or attending community programs. Jessica’s recommendation: Study. She says: “Run all of the financial reports from your spa’s software system and dig deep. Pony up your skills by taking a financial management distance-based course through the ISPA and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute for less than $100 USD.”

We hope these key areas help you in developing your own career goals and learning plan. Are you a spa manager or director? What else do you think is crucial when working in the industry? Let us know in the comments below or join the conversation on social media.

Tea Tree Oil Benefits For Acne

I incorporated tea tree oil into my skin care routine as a move of desperation because I was beginning to feel very discouraged regarding the condition of my not-so-pretty post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

By this point, I feel like I had tried product after product, medication after medication; but, to no avail.

I first heard about tea tree oil fading hyperpigmentation and being used for treatments for skin acne from a family member who swore that 100% pure tea tree oil was the reason why her more prominent dark spots were virtually gone.

Not only that, but she assured me that the tea tree oil worked quickly and got rid of her hyperpigmentation within weeks. Now, that's the kind of magic I like to hear about.

As I usually do before purchasing a product, I committed to doing some research to justify making an investment.

Top 4 Benefits Of Tea Tree Oil On Acne

1. Tea tree has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant properties. Because of these properties, tea tree oil can potentially aid in clearing the skin of acne and preventing the acne from spreading further.  It may be particularly beneficial if you have oily skin.  In a small study of sunscreens formulated with tea tree oil, the group with the tea tree oil had a small decrease in skin oiliness after using for 30 days.

2. A 5% tea tree oil solution is as effective as benzoyl peroxide in treating acne.  The tea tree oil acne treatment group also experienced fewer side effects compared to the benzoyl peroxide treatment.

3. Tea tree oil has healing properties which sped up wound healing time versus the conventional treatment. The faster wound healing means light hyperpigmentation could be faded faster, and it would prevent the likelihood of a dark spot forming from a wound like an acne lesion since it's healing faster.

4. Tеа trее oÑ–l is high in a component cаllеd terpinen-4-ol.  This component is highly anti inflammatory which will help to calm the redness and irritation that many people with acne have to face.

Initially, the combating light hyperpigmentation point set me off, because what about all my darker spots that I'm most concerned about?

If tea tree oil is only going to be most effective against light hyperpigmentation, does that mean my darker spots have no chance of fading? Not really the news I wanted to hear. Even so, I trusted the family member I spoke to and if she thinks I should give it a chance, then maybe I should stop questioning everything.

Does Tea Tree Oil Work On Hyperpigmentation or Dark Spots?

There's not much evidence that tea tree oil would help hyperpigmentation, other than some people's experiences, and tea tree oil may work better on new hyperpigmentation or preventing hyperpigmentation due to it's speeding up of the healing process.

How To Use Tea Tree Oil For Acne

Mеthod 1: DIY method diluting tea tree oil for acne.

Tea tree oil should be diluted before applying on skin.  This is because tea tree oil can cause irritation or an allergic reaction if it is applied directly, which can make acne worse.

  • Dilute 1 drop of tea tree oil, to 4-5 drops of a carrier oil.  Oil should be diluted by another oil because oil and water don't mix.  Recommended carrier oils are jojoba oil because jojoba oil is most similar to skin's natural sebum.  Other popular carrier oils are rosehip oil since rosehip oil is also popular for fading acne scars.
  • After cleansing skin, apply the mixture directly onto skin, or use a cotton swap to apply on skin.
  • Apply moisturizer after.

Method 2 : Using products that are formulated with tea tree oil.

If you don't want to measure and mix products, you can buy products formulated with the correct ratio of ingredients including tea tree so you can get the benefits of this ingredient within your regular skincare.  Banish's Vitamin C Beauty Elixir is an toner that contains tea tree oil and it also has hyperpigmentation fading ingredients like vitamin c.

This Is How I Used My Tea Tree Oil On Hyperpigmentation

After doing my research, within that week, I went out and bought myself a bottle of pure, undiluted tea tree essential oil. In order to incorporate it into my skincare routine, I decided to apply the tea tree oil with in small quantities twice a day every day as a spot treatment rather than coating my face in it. I also made the decision to keep the essential oil in its purest form and avoided diluting it unless my skin began to show signs of irritation.  I think because I only used it as a spot treatment, the undiluted form was okay for me, but please test it first before applying all over!

Did My Hyperpigmentation Fade Using Tea Tree Oil?

Alas, tea tree oil did very little for my darker hyperpigmentation. My lighter spots, however, showed signs of fading fairly quickly! Within four weeks, I noticed that some of my light spots had completely disappeared while others were significantly lighter than they were. Undoubtedly, this outcome made me very happy. However, the darker spots were still as evident as ever, much to my disappointment.

My acne situation also didn't seem to change much. I still had some deep acne but with relatively fewer breakouts. Although, the tea tree oil can possibly be given credit for keeping my acne at bay and preventing it from turning into a huge cystic breakout.

Overall, I think tea tree oil was worth the investment since a small bottle can last a long time. It is highly recommended after all for acne prone skin. Even though the spots of hyperpigmentation that bothered me the most were essentially left untouched, the lighter spots did go away faster.  For darker spots, you may want to look into treatments designed for it like a vitamin c serum.

Using Tea Tree Oil Toner On Acne

While tea tree oil wasn't the best for my older and darker hyperpigmentation spots, one of my friend tried it for acne, and saw some amazing results! Here's their story:

"For me, I found Tea Tree to be one of the best weapons to fight my acne. When I was almost 17, my late brother used Tea Tree as his toner. He was also suffering from acne, but it was not as severe as mine. It worked really well for my brother. His skin had gotten better ever since he used it as a toner, then he gave it to me and I started using it:

I used it for about 3 weeks twice a day until I got to see the significant change on my face – my pimples seemed to be healed.

I was in disbelief, of course, as I never really paid any attention to skincare before. All I did was study, and I really had no time to take care my face. I was utterly thankful to my brother. The verdict is… I really, really love Tea Tree! I have used the toner for years and I don't think I'll change it."

How To Treat A Sunburn

Written By:
Alisha Whitley

Despite all we’re told about sun protection, more than one-third of adults admit to getting sunburned in the past year. While the immediate symptoms of a sunburn are only temporary, the long-term damage is permanent and can emerge years later. Read on for our guide to caring for sunburned skin - and how you can prevent it from occurring in the first place.

What Causes A Sunburn?

A sunburn is skin damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. When your skin is exposed to UV rays, it releases a pigment called melanin to protect itself. Melanin acts as a natural sunscreen by absorbing the energy from UV rays and redistributing it. However, it can only provide so much protection - if you are spending too much time in the sun, your tan can quickly become a sunburn.

When you sunburn, your body produces chemicals called inflammatory mediators which increase blood flow in the affected area(s). This action produces a sunburn’s characteristic redness, warmth and swelling. While you may immediately notice a pink hue and rise in temperature, it takes up to 24 hours for a sunburn’s full effects to set in. In other words, don’t be surprised if your slight burn becomes lobster-like by day two.

UVA Vs. UVB Rays

When it comes to UV radiation, there are two types of rays that cause skin damage: UVA and UVB. Here’s how they differ:

UVA Rays

UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface. They are present with equal intensity throughout the day and penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays. This type of radiation plays a key role in photoaging: It alters the DNA of cells in the dermis, causing damage to structural proteins like collagen and elastin. With a weakened structure, the skin begins to sag and develop fine lines and wrinkles.

UVB Rays

UVB rays cause damage in the skin’s more superficial layers and are responsible for skin reddening and sunburn. They are also more closely linked with the development of skin cancer. The intensity of UVB rays varies by season, location and time of day. These rays are at peak intensity between 10AM and 4PM PST from April to October but have the potential to damage skin year-round. Unlike UVA rays, they cannot pass through glass and will reflect back towards the skin, hitting it twice - and causing more damage.

Why Are Sunburns Bad?

So, why are sunburns so bad? Aside from their immediate pain and discomfort, sunburns also cause long-lasting damage to the skin. Sunburns contribute to premature aging in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and sun spots. They also play a major role in the development of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the risk for melanoma doubles if you have had more than five sunburns, and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.

Sunburn Severity

Sunburns can range in severity, from mild burns that fade quickly to more severe burns that can require a trip to the hospital:

Mild

Mild sunburns typically last between three and five days. They are accompanied by redness, tenderness and slight pain.

Moderate

Moderate sunburns tend to be more painful and can take up to two weeks to heal completely. They are characterized by vibrant redness, swelling, heat and small blisters.

Severe

Severe sunburns require a visit to a doctor. These burns are accompanied by red to purplish discoloration, large painful blisters and symptoms such as chills, nausea and dehydration.

Symptoms Of Sunburned Skin

The symptoms of sunburned skin include:

  • Redness
  • Pain and/or tenderness
  • Heat
  • Itchiness
  • Swelling
  • Small blisters

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it is recommended that you visit a doctor:

  • Fever
  • Faintness
  • Rapid pulse
  • Nausea
  • Chills
  • Confusion
  • Large, painful blisters

Risk Factors

Everyone reacts differently to sun exposure. There are several risk factors that can impact your susceptibility to sunburn:

  • A fair complexion
  • Freckles and/or red hair
  • UV exposure between 10AM and 4PM PST
  • High altitudes
  • Proximity to the equator
  • Tanning beds
  • Medications that cause photosensitivity

Stages Of A Sunburn

A typical sunburn follows three stages:

Stage 1: First 1-3 Hours

In the first few hours after sun exposure, your body reacts by increasing blood flow to the affected area(s). This inflammatory response causes the skin to become pink, swollen and warm to the touch.

Stage 2: First 24 Hours

It takes around 24 hours for the full effects of a sunburn to set in. As the skin continues to hold onto heat and discomfort, redness and pain peak and small blisters may begin to pop up on the skin’s surface.

Stage 3: 3-14 Days

The healing process can last from three days to two weeks. During this time, the skin begins to “normalize”: Redness, swelling and pain decline and the skin may become itchy as it starts to peel and flake.

Fun fact: Why does sunburned skin peel? Sun damage accelerates skin cell turnover, shortening the amount of time young cells usually have to mature and separate. As a result, they stick together like sheets of tissue paper that peel off over the course of healing.

How To Protect Your Skin

Luckily, there are several ways that you can protect your skin before, during and after sun exposure.

Before Sun Exposure

Rule number one of sun protection: Always apply a chemical or physical sunscreen. But, which one? Equally effective, they simply differ in their active ingredients and how they protect the skin. Chemical sunscreens are “absorbers” that convert UV rays into heat before releasing them from the skin. Physical sunscreens create a protective barrier that blocks and reflects UV rays before they make contact with the skin’s surface. No matter which you choose, we recommend reaching for a broad-spectrum formula that will protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

What about SPF? SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor” and measures how long your skin will be protected from UVB rays (and by extension, sunburn). For extended sun exposure, The Skin Cancer Foundation advises an SPF of 30, a protective factor which filters out 97 percent of the sun’s UV radiation. Apply at least one teaspoon of sunscreen for each area of your body to keep it sufficiently protected - and don’t skip over easily forgotten areas like the tops of the ears, the back of the neck and the hands.

During Sun Exposure

Sun care doesn’t stop once you’ve applied sunscreen. To avoid sun damage, it’s crucial that you continue to protect your skin throughout the day. Here are a few best practices to keep in mind:

  1. Seek shade between the hours of 10AM and 4PM PST, when UV rays are at their most intense.
  2. Beware reflective surfaces: Water, snow and sand reflect UV rays and increase the risk of sunburn.
  3. Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protective Factor) 40 or more.
  4. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, or after 40 minutes if you’re swimming or sweating.
  5. Head indoors at the first sign of sunburn.

After Sun Exposure: What Helps Sunburn?

We’ve all been there: You nod off at the beach, spend two minutes too long in the sun or forget to keep track of your sunscreen application. Moral of the story is, even if you follow the steps above, there’s no guarantee you’ll end the day sunburn-free. Here’s what to do when you get a sunburn.

Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum

Stay Hydrated: Inside & Out

Whitney Bowe, MD tells HuffPost: “Bad sunburns cause a process called vasodilation, where your blood vessels dilate and you lose water from your skin very quickly.” To counteract the drying effects of a sunburn, you should drink plenty of water and load up on hydrating fruits and vegetables like cucumber, watermelon and cantaloupe. Topically, you can apply a deeply hydrating serum like Eminence Organics Strawberry Rhubarb Hyaluronic Serum to replenish dehydrated skin.

Cool Your Skin Down

After a sunburn, it’s important to cool your skin down. You can take a cool bath or shower to soothe redness and dryness - but skip the soap, which can irritate scorched skin. If cool water isn’t cutting it, apply a cold compress to the burn. Pour water and ice into a bowl, soak a cloth in the liquid and hold it over the burn. Each of these methods will help absorb heat from your skin and minimize swelling.

Soothe & Repair Red, Dry Skin

Sunburn can leave your skin red, dry and raw. To repair dryness, reach for moisturizing oils and lotions that include soothing ingredients such as rosemary, arnica, rosehip and stone crop. And, steer clear of products containing petroleum, an ingredient that can lock in heat and exacerbate your symptoms.

Eminence Organics Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar recommends pairing our Rosehip & Lemongrass Soothing Hydrator and Rosehip & Lemongrass Repair Balm to relieve red, dry skin. Apply the lightweight hydrator from head to toe, then layer the balm to zero in on areas needing extra attention, like the nose and cheeks. Both products include a Natural Repair Complex derived from rosehip and rosemary which is formulated to repair and protect dry skin that has been exposed to the elements.

How To Improve The Look Of Sunburn Infographic

Don’t Pick

Hands off! It may be tempting, but don’t pull at, pick or exfoliate your sunburned skin. Why? It’s already shedding on its own. As your skin heals, healthy skin cells rise to the surface and the sun-damaged cells naturally flake and peel off. These new cells are delicate and susceptible to irritation: Picking and prodding will only make your sunburn look - and feel - worse.

Apply A Vitamin C Serum

One of the key culprits of premature aging is - you guessed it - sun exposure. UV rays promote the production of free radicals, unstable and highly reactive molecules that cause damage to structural proteins like collagen and elastin. Without a stable structure, skin loses the volume, density and bounce associated with a youthful complexion.

You can minimize the visible signs of sun exposure by adding a Vitamin C serum to your skin care routine. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radical damage. It also promotes collagen production in the skin, helping to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Natalie recommends our Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum which enhances the benefits of Vitamin C with antioxidant-rich leafy greens like kale, spinach and broccoli sprouts.

Eminence Organics Stone Crop Restorative Body Wrap

Get A Full Body Treatment

If slathering your skin in aloe vera isn’t doing the trick, book a professional body treatment at your favorite spa. Many spas offer after-sun services designed to cool and calm red, dry skin. Natalie suggests booking a treatment that includes our Stone Crop Restorative Body Wrap. This wrap contains a soothing blend of stone crop, aloe and powerful actives that hydrate and relieve dryness.

Tip: When you book your appointment, be sure to mention that you are suffering from sunburn so your esthetician can customize your treatment accordingly.

How To Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer

Woman sits in shade at the beach with a wide brimmed hat on.

How To Protect Yourself From Skin Cancer

Everyone has different skin concerns but whether you’re tackling the visible signs of aging, large pores or the look of blemishes, everyone should think about sun damage. Regardless of skin type, age or gender, anyone can fall victim to the harmful effects of the sun, including premature signs of aging, sun spots and most alarmingly, skin cancer. Find out the five ways you can protect yourself from skin cancer, and read success stories from cancer survivors.

Reducing Sun Damage

As the most common form of cancer, a shocking 5.4 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed each year. The American Cancer Society has noted that melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer, will account for about 96,480 cases of skin cancer in 2019. We have five simple suggestions to reduce sun exposure which you can remember with the acronym: SCALE. Here’s how to SCALE back your sun exposure by:

  1. Skipping
  2. Covering
  3. Applying
  4. Limiting
  5. Examining

1. Skipping Tanning Beds

We know it looks “healthy,” but deeply tanned skin is far from healthy skin. A tan is your body’s response to sun damage - which means that if you have a tan, you've already sustained skin cell damage. A study by the Skin Cancer Foundation found that “people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent.” The best protection for your skin is to avoid sunbaking at all times - especially in tanning beds where the UV radiation is stronger than that of the sun.

People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by 75 percent.

2. Covering Up

Effective protection from the sun means covering up with clothing, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. Clothing is considered the first line of defense against UV rays with its own measure of sun protection. UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, is to clothing what SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is to sunscreen. Similar to an SPF, the higher the UPF rating the higher the protection from the sun, with a UPF rating of 15 to 20 being “good” and a rating of 40 or higher being “excellent.” To help protect the scalp, face, ears and neck, a hat with a brim of three inches or greater is your best defense. To protect the eyes, sunglasses with UV protection keep your peepers safe from damage such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

3. Applying Sun Protection

It’s important to remember that UV damage can occur all year long, so daily sunscreen application - even on cloudy days and during the winter months - is necessary for healthy skin. Eminence Organics President Boldijarre Koronczay recommends applying an Eminence Organics SPF moisturizer daily and, for extra coverage, finishing with a dusting of your favorite shade of our Sun Defense Minerals. Morag Currin, Founder, International Director and Educator for Oncology Training International (OTI) agrees, saying, “Wear an SPF every day. Eminence Organics has multiple formulations for a variety of skin concerns.” As skin cancer can occur anywhere on your body, it’s essential to protect all exposed areas of your skin with an all-over sunscreen like our Lilikoi Mineral Defense Sport Sunscreen.

Wear an SPF every day. Eminence Organics has multiple formulations for a variety of skin concerns.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying the equivalent of two tablespoons of sunscreen to your entire body at least 30 minutes before going outside. As a general rule, sunscreens should also be re-applied at least once every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating more frequently.

4. Limiting Direct Sunlight

If it feels like your skin is burning, then it probably is. The sun’s rays are the strongest between 11 AM and 2 PM. If you are outside during this time, seek out shade and stay out of the sun as much as possible. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing in the shade of a tree or under the protection of an umbrella. Morag adds: “The best way to protect yourself from skin cancer is staying out of the sun – but when this is not possible, try to seek out shade and wear clothing that protects your skin.”

The best way to protect yourself from skin cancer is staying out of the sun – but when this is not possible, try to seek out shade and wear clothing that protects your skin.

5. Examining Your Skin

Finally, protect yourself against skin cancer through early detection: If you can spot it, you can stop it. In addition to being the most common form of cancer, it’s also the most curable if diagnosed and treated in its early stages. Key indicators are irregular spots, sudden changes in the size or shape of any growths, as well as any sudden discomfort. If you notice something, see your physician right away for a professional opinion.

Surviving Cancer

Increased sensitivity, irritation and acne are common side effects of cancer treatments, and proper care is key to helping the skin heal and supporting patients’ self confidence. Morag notes that “for those dealing with cancer or its repercussions, look for OTI-recommended skin care products to help manage any discomfort.” Eminence Organics is proud to be recommended by OTI and we’ve been honored for several people to share their cancer survivor stories with us over the years.Belle Hack and her family sit in a garden

Belle’s Story

Belle Hack was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2015 at the age of 80. To treat the cancer, Belle had surgery to remove the skin cancer cells from the right side of her face. Although the outcome of her surgery was positive, the operation produced a large scar on her face which left Belle feeling self-conscious. We spoke with Belle to hear about her experience and advice for others.

How and when did you discover you had skin cancer?

I had a small red spot on my cheek for a few years, and I noticed it got a little more red with time. So my family doctor looked into it and had a biopsy done and sure enough, there was a cancerous cell in it. On September 30, 2015, I was given the choice of surgery or radiation. I had heard so many bad things about radiation, I decided to go with surgery but was very worried about the outcome. They gave me a cream to help draw out the cancer and that they said will make the area look very pink. On November 9, 2015, I had the surgery done and was now cancer free.

Tell us about how Eminence Organics products helped you in the healing process.

Using the Facial Recovery Oil softened and lightened the skin on the scar and all around the area so that you almost can’t see the scar at all! I am amazed by how well and fast I noticed the oil working its magic. I was very self-conscious about people looking at my face. I didn't actually believe that this organic product would do much or anything at all - especially on this big scar! My granddaughter, who told me many times it would work, made me want to try it out. The Facial Recovery Oil healed it up beautifully and not many people even notice it at all! I officially believe in Eminence and the organic route because of the amazing effects they have had on my skin.

Do you have any advice about early detection of skin cancer?

I suggest that if you have a mark on your skin and you start to see it change - in any way, shape, or form - go get it checked! It really is "better safe than sorry." I shouldn't have waited like I had, and I won’t hesitate for anything that seems like "nothing" again. My experience and recovery would not have been as extensive as it was if I had it checked right away.

I suggest that if you have a mark on your skin and you start to see it change - in any way, shape, or form - go get it checked!

How do you protect your skin from sun damage since your skin cancer scare?

At 81, and with everything I know now about the sun, I try my best not to be in the sun at all anymore. I stay in the shade with my Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 32, and I cover up and wear a hat if I know I will be in the sun at all.Chrystel Mann before and after cancer treatment

Chrystel’s Story

Chrystel Mann has been a massage therapist for over 25 years and an esthetician for over 15 years. Currently an esthetician at an Eminence Organics spa, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Like many people, Chrystel’s treatment plan included chemotherapy. As an esthetician, she was aware of the havoc this can cause for the skin and planned to use only OTI recommended products. We were lucky to hear Chrystel share her valuable insight and positive outlook.

How did your cancer journey start?

In the summer of 2014, my breast was very tender, the skin was peeling, and the nipple was going inward. I had a biopsy and found out that I had stage four breast cancer that had metastasized to the lymph nodes, collar bones, breast bone, lung and the hip. Chemotherapy started in November with six months of agony as well as vomiting and diarrhea that lasted eight months… During that time, I stayed very positive. I had to live for my children and my husband. All my inner strength went into healing and staying positive.

How did you take care of your skin?

I reached out to Eminence Organics staff at the beginning of my treatment and asked what products would work for my skin during the chemotherapy and the winter months. It was suggested that I use the Beyond Organic Biodynamic® skin care line for its pure and gentle ingredients.

I ordered the Yellow Sweet Clover Anti-Redness Masque, Apricot Calendula Nourishing Cream and Echinacea Recovery Cream. My skin regimen consisted of cleansing my face with Stone Crop Gel Wash and light exfoliation with Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant, followed by one of the Beyond Organic products. I would switch back and forth between the three, depending on how my skin felt and the winter weather. If it were a very cold day, I would apply the mask and leave it on, like a cream.

What were the results to your skin?

Well, to my great surprise, my skin remained beautiful! Every one that saw me or met me commented that I didn't look sick, and my skin was radiant. I felt protected! As my profession calls, I always look at other people's skin. At the cancer center, everyone looked pale and ashy or completely inflamed with a bright red complexion. I was the only one smiling and looking normal, besides the fact that I was bald-headed.

Every one that saw me or met me commented that I didn't look sick, and my skin was radiant. I felt protected!

How are you now?

After six months of intense chemotherapy, treatment continued and is still continuing until October 22, 2015 which will be the last treatment. I’m so happy I have only two more to go. It's not chemo anymore, but it is still a toxic medicine and my skin is still beautiful. I feel very grateful for Eminence and the support it brought to my skin during this journey. As of now, this very invasive cancer shows no trace in my body anywhere! I am a miracle on two feet!

We are so inspired by these wonderful women, and we thank them for taking the time to share their stories.

As one of the most common forms of cancer, skin cancer must be taken seriously. Ensuring that you SCALE back on sun exposure is key to preventing sun damage and enjoying the outdoors. Do you have any other sun protection tips you’d like to share? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below and on social media.

Luxury Spa Treatments To Try At Home

Written By:
Alisha Whitley

A busy lifestyle leaves little opportunity to relax, unwind and carve out much-needed “me” time. Yet, when you’re always on the go, stress can spin out of control. If dedicating time to self-care seems daunting, start small. To set you on the path to wellness, we’ve compiled seven mini spa treatments to try at home. Practice one of these rituals a day - or mix and match - to enhance your overall health and well-being:

  1. Fruit-Infused Water & Herbal Tea
  2. Hand Massage
  3. Aromatherapy Shower
  4. Body Scrub
  5. Mask & Milk Bath
  6. Dry Brushing
  7. Meditation

Fruit-Infused Water & Herbal Tea

There’s a reason your favorite spa serves fruit-infused water and herbal tea. Both beverages encourage you to slow down and savor the moment. Plus, their ingredients boast plenty of benefits for mind and body health. Sip them morning and night to experience a taste of the spa from the comfort of your own home.

Spa Water

Spa water - or “detox” water - is water that has been infused with fresh fruits, vegetables or herbs, usually overnight. While it won’t necessarily detoxify your system, it will provide the hydration your body needs to function at its best (plus, it’s delicious). Here are a few of our favorite fruit-infused water combinations:

  • Cucumber + Mint
  • Strawberry + Basil
  • Grapefruit + Rosemary
  • Berry + Green Tea

Herbal Tea

Herbal tea, on the other hand, is well-known for its lengthy list of health benefits. These brews, which have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, are brimming with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Herbal teas have the potential to relieve stress, calm your mind and body, support brain health and boost your immune system. Here are two of our favorite blends:

  • Chamomile + Lavender (soothes and relaxes the mind and body)
  • Peppermint + Lemon (promotes focus and boosts mental performance)

Hand Massage

No time for a full body massage? No worries. An easy way to unwind is to give yourself a five-minute hand massage. This type of massage not only releases tension after a day spent typing and texting but also calms the nervous system and enhances circulation. Here’s how to perform one at home:

  1. Warm a few drops of your favorite body oil or lotion between your palms. Our pick: Stone Crop Body Oil, which is infused with stone crop and arnica and is ideal for massage treatments.
  2. Begin with your palm facing up and firmly press the tip of each finger.
  3. Use the thumb of the opposite hand to rub the muscles surrounding your palm with gentle, circular motions. Pay particular attention to the fleshy area between your thumb and wrist as well as at the base of your fingers.
  4. Slowly knead the center of your palm.
  5. Slide your thumb down your palm in long, straight strokes. Focus on the space between each tendon, starting at the base of your fingers and ending at your wrist.
  6. Flip your hand over and repeat step four along the back of your hand.
  7. Palm up, rub each individual finger using small, counter-clockwise motions and moving from the base of the finger to the tip.
  8. Switch hands.

Aromatherapy Shower

Bring the spa home by adding an aromatherapy element to your daily shower. According to Healthline: “Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell and long-term memory.” Creating an at-home aromatherapy shower is simple:

  1. Spray your favorite essential oil blend onto a washcloth
  2. Tuck it into a corner of your shower
  3. Let the water run for 5-10 minutes
  4. Step into the oil-infused steam
  5. Take a deep breath and relax into the present moment

Not sure which essential oil to choose? Try these selections for a relaxing, stimulating or balancing soak:

  • Relaxing: neroli, jasmine, ylang ylang
  • Stimulating: citrus oils, rosemary, eucalyptus
  • Balancing: lavender, clary sage, bergamot

Body Scrub

Elevate your at-home spa treatment with a body scrub. These are physical exfoliants that use salt and/or sugar to mechanically slough away dead skin cells, draw out impurities and smooth rough, dry skin. But, which to choose? Try a product like our Stone Crop Revitalizing Body Scrub which blends both hydrating sugar and invigorating salt to provide long-lasting, luxurious exfoliation.

squeezing Stone Crop Revitalizing Body Scrub into hand

Applying a body scrub has plenty of benefits for the skin:

    • Promotes efficient circulation and skin cell turnover
    • Removes dead cells from the skin’s surface
    • Smooths and softens rough, dry skin
    • Draws out impurities and clears congestion
    • Frees ingrown hairs and smooths razor bumps

    Mask & Milk Bath

If a bath is more your style, follow Cleopatra’s lead and sink into a soothing milk bath. Adding milk to your bath water has plenty of benefits. Milk is packed with healthy fats, proteins, lactic acid, vitamins and minerals which help to soften and soothe dry, itchy skin.

    To make a milk bath:

    1. Add 1-2 cups of milk to a full tub of warm water
    2. Mix in your favorite body oil (we recommend our ultra-hydrating Apricot Body Oil)
    3. Add extras like rose petals, herbs, honey and/or oats
    4. Let ingredients soak for 15 minutes
    5. Step in, sit back and relax

To truly indulge, apply your favorite Eminence Organics face mask. Our Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque combines rosehips, lemon juice, maize flour and honey to smooth and revitalize your skin’s appearance. Apply a thin layer with your fingertips and leave on while you soak into your milk bath. Afterward, remove the mask with a damp cloth to reveal a radiant-looking complexion.

    Dry Brushing

Another body treatment to try at home is dry brushing. This ancient technique has gained popularity over the years for its ability to boost circulation, detoxify the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. And, it’s incredibly easy to do at home! Here’s how:

    1. Step into the shower (but don’t turn on the water)
    2. Reach for a body brush with stiff, natural bristles
    3. Brush your body using long, sweeping motions
    4. Begin at your feet and move upward, toward the direction of your heart
    5. Brush each area several times; overlap as you go
    6. Rinse away dead skin and debris

Follow your dry brush with a toning body cream that will continue to target areas of concern. The Stone Crop Contouring Body Cream contains extracts of microalgae and coffee to smooth skin and improve the look of cellulite. Massage it into cleansed skin, focusing on problem areas, and leave on.

    Meditation

It’s no secret that meditation is incredibly beneficial for mind and body health. For thousands of years, it has been celebrated for its ability to train the mind to focus, stay in the present moment and gain a deeper awareness of self and surroundings. With regular practice, meditation has been shown to impart the following benefits:

    • Relaxes the mind and body
    • Lowers cortisol levels and relieves stress
    • Increases feelings of positivity and happiness
    • Enhances communication and decision-making
    • Improves memory and focus

    Benefits Of Meditation infographic

Unsure how to start a meditation practice? Try adding five minutes of mindful breathing to your daily routine:

    1. Sit comfortably
    2. Close your eyes and relax your body
    3. Slowly inhale through your nose and out your mouth
    4. Breathe deeply, filling your lungs and expanding your diaphragm
    5. Focus on the sensation of breath entering and leaving your body
    6. Follow your breath in and out for five minutes
    7. When your mind wanders, return to your breath

Rosacea Treatment Products & Tips to Calm Skin Redness

Skin Redness: Why Is My Skin So Blotchy?

Skin Redness: Why Is My Skin So Blotchy?

    Written By:
    Jen Okhiria

Whether due to a change in environment, stress or an allergic reaction, skin redness can pop up when you least expect it. If you’ve ever woken up with a blotchy complexion, you know that it can be confusing, uncomfortable and frustrating to treat. Learn what may be causing you to literally see red and how you can go about improving the look of skin redness.

    What Causes Skin Redness?

If skin redness appears suddenly, continues to spread, will not fade and/or is extremely painful, the most important thing to do is seek out medical advice. It is possible that this could be a sign of a more serious condition, infection or allergic reaction, and it is crucial to rule out these possibilities before treating the skin.

If medical conditions are excluded, book a consultation with an esthetician to develop the best treatment plan. Redness is caused by inflammation and is often connected to common issues like sensitivity, exposure to outdoor elements and/or rosacea. Because these causes can present in the skin in surprisingly similar ways, seeking a professional opinion is crucial to treating your specific cause of redness. Closeup of red, sensitive skin

    Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is a common skin type that is different from sensitized skin (a temporary condition). Sensitive skin types are easily reactive to stimuli that often don’t bother other skin types. This can include fragrance, physical exfoliation, certain acids and heat. These stimuli can trigger inflammation and irritation in sensitive skin, leading to a blotchy complexion, rashes or bumps. Closeup of skin that is red from environmental stress

    Outdoor Environment

If your skin turns red while you’re enjoying the outdoors, you’re likely to lay the blame on sunburn. However, the sun isn’t the only element that can cause your skin to turn red.  Exposure to other environmental factors like cold temperatures, strong winds, heavy rain, pollution and allergens (like pollen or grass) can also leave your skin feeling red, itchy and raw. If you have a sensitive or dry skin type in the first place, this exposure will leave the skin even more inflamed and out of balance. Closeup of cheek with rosacea

    Rosacea

Probably the most common skin condition associated with redness is rosacea. Eminence Organics Product Support Representative and Certified Esthetician Alicia Hawthorne says: “Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin disorder that mainly affects skin on the face, causing redness around the nose, chin, forehead and cheeks primarily.” Rosacea is a chronic skin condition with four main forms: erythemato-telangiectatic, papulo-pustular, phymatous and ocular rosacea. Erythemato-telangiectatic rosacea can also include uncomfortable swelling and roughness. Papulo-pustular rosacea can be mistaken for acne as pustules on the cheeks are a common symptom. Phymatous rosacea is common on the nose and causes the skin to thicken. Ocular rosacea affects both the skin and eyes causing the eyes to be consistently uncomfortable.

    What Should I Avoid?

To improve the look of redness, dermatologists advise against using products with strong detergents or fragrances that strip the skin’s moisture barrier (WebMD). Avoiding harmful irritants like added parabens, petrolatum, mineral oils, propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulfate are a good first step in getting rid of redness. Alicia also shares that anyone dealing with skin redness should avoid:

    • Salicylic acid in high amounts
    • Prescription retinol
    • Hydroquinone
    • Alcohols
    • Washing the face with hot water
    • Hot showers/baths

In addition to skin care, lifestyle choices and prioritizing wellness can also help treat skin redness. What triggers your redness? Is it certain foods, alcohol, weather, lack of sleep? Keep note of these through a journal or app to take control of your skin condition. Ensure that your skin is protected when heading outdoors, eat a fresh, balanced diet avoiding inflammatory choices and try to stay at a cool temperature as much as possible.

    Ingredients That Help Red Skin

There are many ingredients touted as “curing” red skin, and it is important to stay informed. While nothing will cure redness, calming ingredients to look for include:

    • Azelaic acid
    • Lavender
    • Chamomile
    • Flax/Linden Seed Extract
    • Clary Sage
    • Arnica
    • Aloe
    • Rosehip
    • Calendula
    • Echinacea

Having the assistance of a professional is important when treating redness. While the aforementioned ingredients are fantastic options, your skin is unique to you. Having a licensed esthetician diagnose your needs and sensitivities will ensure you do not aggravate your symptoms further, worsening your flare-ups. Eminence Organics skin redness infographic
