Which foundations help or hurt you? 4 ideas!
I love your question, precisely because I wouldn’t have thought of it! But it matters because we want great skin, and this is another way to help ourselves.
First, I see some foundations now that are promoting “active” ingredients. Forget about this!!! I’ve seen one that had enough of an “active” ingredient to make a difference. Seems like a good imagination on the part of marketing to me. One drop of Vitamin C or retinol just doesn’t matter in a product. It’s one reason I love companies that give us the actual percentage of their “active” ingredients.
And ……. climate DOES make a difference. We’ve all experienced this. Dry Sun Valley in the winter for skiing is very different than the heat and humidity of the south.
Five reasons to love foundation:
- Hot & Humid. Foundation just seems to slip off doesn’t it and get greasy. Try a light, non comedogenic sunscreen formulated without oil, with a mineral powder foundation over that. We love the Jane Iredale powder compact with the brush, or the Bare Minerals. There are others. Also helpful, rice powder blotting papers from Shiseido and other companies. You can blot FIRST, then reapply the mineral powder foundation with the brush.
- Dry, Dry, Dry. Like the desert, where wrinkles and sun damage are more the problem. You want to double or triple layer moisture and use your foundation to help this. Try the Vitamin B5 Hydrating Gel as a base layer with your favorite super hydrating moisturizer, then your sunscreen which hydrates, with your favorite hydrating foundation lightly over that. I love the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer as a foundation.
- Just Perfect. This is an environment where you rarely need airconditioning or central heating. Ok…where…. maybe San Diego or Hawaii? There aren’t many places like this. Then just a light sunscreen and your favorite foundation. I love the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in oil-free for this (Nordstrom carries this).
- Outdoor sports. This is really sport specific so I won’t get too detailed, but think waterproof and sweat proof for your sunscreen and the same for any foundation. I love the Trader Joes little Sport Sunscreen sticks for touch ups when sweating, and also the Colorscience Powder Sunscreens. They wear like iron.
